Introduction to the different African ecosystems and their conservation realities
A mix of classroom and field course that will provide a view of the environment and conservation issues in continental Africa.
During the course we will visit different African and Kenyan ecosystems, where we will be able to appreciate their differences and similarities as well as observe their main elements of fauna and flora.
The course also offers a detailed introduction to the state of conservation of the continent’s main ecosystems and species, and how they are studied and preserved for future generations.
Objectives of the course Environment and Conservation in Africa
This course gives an overview of the conservation status of Africa and its preservation.
Analyze and contrast the essential environmental processes.
Focus on the main African biomas and the role of flora and fauna keystone species with an evolutionary perspective.
Interpret basic key facts
About environmental history of continental Africa and be able to integrate them into the conservation issues of concrete countries or biomes and in other environmental issues.
Get to know th roots of African conservation
Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the roots of African conservation and related environmental and social problems and the links with economics, society, and development issues.
Understanding different conservation philosophies
Evaluate the different elements of the new thinking in conservation and protected areas, flora, and fauna in Africa and know how/when to use them to design meaningful protected areas and networks of protected areas.
Indigenous peoples’ relations with their environment
Value the relationship of African indigenous people with nature and how they contribute to protecting the environment and to sustainability.
Be able to interpret information critically and develop an in-depth understanding of environmental issues
Research, interpret information, and critically analyze ideas of a conservation issue to be presented in the field or in the classroom.
Develop a deep understanding through field experience and/or research of the factors affecting conservation, the tools, and the economic and societal implications.
